Is there some way of getting rss feeds of say the news, history or library sections?

There's ways to fix that, but it's something we should do when upgrading since it's all in panels and the theme layer.

Did anyone make any changes to the rss feeds? I had to turn them off a couple of days ago as it started crashing my email client which I use as my rss client.

No changes afaik. Crashing your client sounds like a bug in your client, it's very hard for an RSS feed to do anything nasty
