Shit, I was supposed to post that up, but I haven't been near the computer for the last few days...
Erm... We are better organised than that appears, honestly - if you're in Liverpool come along, it should be interesting and potentially very useful.
Ok. Smallish turnout and quite a diverse range of opinion (one ex-WRP member, some AFers and a couple of 'interested but not convinced'). It was decided to hold a second meeting on the 15th themed around the Iraq war in time for the international day of action on the 18th. How we're going to build for that is something to sort out over the next couple of days.
If you want to be kept in the loop pm me your e-mail address and I'll make sure you get any updates.
Second meeting went really well. Larger turnout of around eight and a wide ranging discussion of war under capitalism and possible anarchist responses. It looks like the group will make a useful contribution to local actions on the International Day of Action this Monday and that some longer term ideas might bear fruit.
After feeling a bit 'meh' after the first meeting, I've come away feeling pretty positive from this one which is the first time in a long time for any kind of meeting. A third meeting shoudl be arranged for next month sometime. I'll keep this thread updated.
The original Merseyside Anarchist Group was founded in 1965 in a flat on Falkener Sq belonging to an Irish Republican, Gerry Bree. We were a bunch of idealistic 6th formers who looked to the older Gerry for inspiration and a sense of history. We made contact with some older Liverpool anarchists, some of whom had fought in Spain and regaled us with their memories of it. We were a regular presence at Anti Vietnam demos locally and nationally and were evident at the famous Grosvenor Sq uprising. Our banner is clear to see on some of the vintage newsfilm from the time. We even carried out a minor act of sabotage at the US Airforce Base at Burtonwood, when we raised the anarchist flag at night and daubed some buildings with anti-war slogans.
Anyone else remember this?
