The social centre is understaffed and there's a security threat at the mo, so if anyone can get down there ring them on 07944874393

It is run by a non-hiearchical collective on a not-for-profit basis. It hosts gigs, workshops, political meetings and lots more. The centre seeks to be a hub of positive resistance, in a city and society where public spaces have been eaten away by consumerism, property speculation and the culture of the car.

confused

Against the twin towers of capitalist alienation & car culture, is it?

But seriously, why is it under threat?

Did that come off the Myspace? Can;t see where it was from...

I wouldn't like to say, I'm not involved but those who are are there at the moment and they haven't got t'internet sorted yet (and I'm sure when they do they'll be to busy to piss about on forums anyway!).

As far as I can tell, they're just turning an empty unused building into a nice space in the centre of town for people to use for gigs, workshops, film showings and meetings. There's also a libary of anarchist literature, and I'm sure there are other exciting plans afoot. I can't see why anyone would have a problem with that *remembers where she is*

AFAIK....The properety developers tried to board them all in on Sunday might, even the front door, when there where kids inside, with the full consent of the police. Since then it's calmed down a bit but they're having to keep a pretty close eye on the contractors and their hammers and the cops etc. Think it's calmed down a bit but they need as many people as possible down there to help do shifts etc.

That's about some social centre in Dublin....why did you put it as if it was a quote about the Norwich one?

It does seem weird that people are clamouring to make sarcastic comments before they even know who’s involved or why or what the aim is. Even revol usually tries to get a picture of what’s going on before he has a go.

I was talking about dublin? What a coincidence, guy lives in dublin. Perhaps i was talking to him.

22 November, 2007 - 20:39

Well, unforunately there's not even a place for people to make sarcastic comments about anymore, as the social centre was shut down this morning. It didn't adhere to fire regulations, apparently.

23 November, 2007 - 14:34

I heard.

looks like you have the interest and numbers to do it again tho, good luck.

18 December, 2007 - 18:10

the same happened to The Basement in Manc. it may be an ongoing trend - get 'em on technicalities. bastidds.

Same thing in Dublin. In fairness though its not acceptable to run a fire-trap just because you're an anarchist. If the worst happened you could lose the entire movement in one night.

Yeah, I agree and although I'm sure at least some of what the Police and Fire Department were feeding us was bullshit, I do think that building was definately unsafe. A couple of people were a little suspicious though, because a previous attempt to create a social centre had also been shut down due to fire regulations.
