Demos outside prisons, occupations of city halls, and riots start with the change of year across Greece
The strike of twelve, and the beginning of the New Year saw hundreds of protesters gathered outside the central prison of the country in Koridallos, SW Athens, where the majority of arrested insurgents are kept pending trial. The protesters set off fireworks and chanted solidarity slogans to hundreds of prisoners who shouted back cordially from their cell windows.
Work release scheme proposed for French prisons
The creaking prison system in France unveils a new post-release labour scheme.
Under the terms of the "Les Clés de l’avenir" agreement signed earlier this year prisoners can have their sentences reduced if they pass a selection process and are found work with one of the partnership firms. The following four areas will be open to prisoners: catering, cleaning, building and logistics.

All 21 Greek prisons are in the grip of prisoners 3-stage campaign in demand of 45-point reform. As part of the protest, more than 5,000 inmates are now on hunger strike.
As of Monday the 3rd of November the totality of prison across greece are under a 3-stage campaign in demand of a 45-point reform, asking amongst other things for abolition of all juvenile prisons, greater freedoms, reduction of prison service and better conditions.
Titan prisons: "consultation" ends, construction set to begin
With the required political processes out of the way, the building of the 2,500 capacity jails is set to begin.
A new report by the Prisons Reform Trust has accompanied the end of the “consultation” period on the government's policy of constructing huge new “titan” prisons, which Gordon Brown has stated will mean the beginning of construction of the jails.
